ABR Electric Sees Level 2 Charger Demand Rise as Collin County EV Registrations Nearly Double

Collin County’s electric vehicle population increased from approximately 18,810 registered vehicles in May 2023 to 36,134 in 2025, an addition of more than 17,300 electric vehicles and growth of roughly 92 percent in about two years. The rapid expansion is reshaping home electrical needs across Plano, Frisco, Allen, McKinney and surrounding North Texas communities, with rising interest in professionally installed home charging equipment.

Registration activity indicates the trend is continuing. Collin County recorded 1,546 new Tesla registrations during the first quarter of 2025, compared with 1,316 during the same period in 2024, an increase of approximately 17.5 percent in a single year for that manufacturer alone.

High-intent local searches include EV charger installation Frisco, home charging setup requests and panel upgrade questions in Plano and Allen. These reflect the questions homeowners face after purchasing vehicles from Tesla, Ford, Chevrolet, Rivian, Hyundai, Kia, Volkswagen and other manufacturers.

Every time a homeowner buys an EV, one of the first practical questions is whether the home can charge it safely and conveniently.”

Many homeowners want dependable overnight charging that leaves the vehicle ready for the following day. ABR Electric recommends beginning with a homeowner’s actual driving habits rather than automatically installing the highest-powered unit available. An evaluation considers average daily mileage, available overnight charging time, vehicle and charger requirements, existing electrical demand, panel condition and available capacity, breaker space, and the distance from the panel to the parking area.

Drivers with longer commutes, larger batteries or limited overnight charging windows may benefit from faster Level 2 Chargers. Other households may meet their needs with a lower charging rate.

The growing vehicle population is also increasing interest in 200-amp panel upgrades, though the company cautions that not every installation requires a new panel. A licensed electrician should perform a load calculation before recommending an upgrade. Depending on the results, options can include adjusting charging current, installing load-management equipment, adding a subpanel or selecting a charger that matches the home’s capacity.

“The right installation is not always the biggest charger,” Adams said. “It is the charger that safely replaces the energy the homeowner uses during a normal day. A panel upgrade should be based on the actual electrical system, not a guess.”
