Mercedes-Benz Stadium deploys a modernized camera system that gives the venue and its public safety partners greater real-time visibility through high-resolution video.
Situated in the heart of downtown Atlanta, Mercedes-Benz Stadium is home to the Atlanta Falcons of the National Football League (NFL) and Atlanta United of Major League Soccer (MLS) and regularly hosts concerts and other large-scale events. With more than 70,000 visitors and employees passing through its gates on peak event days, the stadium is focused on providing a welcoming, secure experience while maintaining high standards for entry and access. As camera technology advanced, the stadium recognized an opportunity to modernize its legacy system, giving teams greater clarity to understand situations quickly, coordinate an appropriate response, and support a positive fan experience.
“With our new Axis deployment, we’re now at around 80 pixels on target, quadrupling our previous image detail and providing our teams with the visibility they need to quickly understand what’s happening and take appropriate action while maintaining a strong fan experience,” said Kevin Pope, Chief Information Officer for AMB Sports and Entertainment, parent company of Mercedes-Benz Stadium. “The clarity of those long-range lenses is amazing, enabling active monitoring even when something is happening far away or lighting conditions are challenging. We can now understand situations with greater speed and accuracy than ever before, giving our team the information they need to make informed decisions and keep our visitors and employees safe.”
In collaboration with GC&E, Mercedes-Benz Stadium deployed Axis technologies including:
- High-resolution fixed cameras installed across the bowl area, exceeding the NFL standard of 50 pixels on target
- Overlapping cameras to eliminate outage-related dead spots
- Axis 4K pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras to enable tracking and real-time investigation while maintaining continuous seating coverage
- Rooftop long-range PTZ cameras for bird’s-eye views of traffic and crowds, integrated with the stadium’s drone detection system
Maximizing public safety response through local collaboration
On event days, Mercedes-Benz Stadium’s Operations Center brings together representatives from public safety agencies including the Atlanta Police Department, Fire Rescue Department, and Emergency Medical Services, alongside the venue security team, stadium department heads, and other key stakeholders. Together, they monitor real-time data and camera feeds, scan relevant public information, and coordinate responses. The integrated nature of the upgraded security system ensures that information can be relayed to relevant parties quickly so the appropriate response is deployed in a timely manner.
The stadium’s comprehensive camera system also creates a unique opportunity to support public safety initiatives in neighboring communities, extending its value beyond the property line. The stadium can work with public-safety partners to provide relevant video that may help with investigations and responses beyond the stadium. For example, Mercedes-Benz Stadium rooftop cameras supported the response to a nearby child abduction, helping provide officers with a detailed description of the abductors, the victim, and the vehicle’s direction of travel. Combined with images from Atlanta’s citywide camera system, that information helped police locate the vehicle and reunite the child with his family within an hour.
“The most effective security systems support public safety by giving teams greater visibility and helping them work together to keep people safe,” said Dean Cunningham, Segment Development Manager, Public Safety at Axis Communications. “For venues like Mercedes-Benz Stadium, that visibility can foster collaboration with public-safety partners beyond the stadium while also creating a safer, more seamless experience for the fans and the community that the venue serves.”
Technology that works behind the scenes
The upgraded video system also helps Mercedes-Benz Stadium use technology to make the experience more seamless for fans. Across the stadium’s many ingress and egress points, personnel can use real-time camera views to identify congestion, direct resources to areas that need attention, and help visitors move toward less crowded routes. At one recent soccer match, stadium personnel used the cameras to redirect visitors to less congested exit points, cutting fan exit time by 50%, from 16 minutes to eight. For fans, it means less time waiting in crowded areas and more time getting where they need to go—an example of how technology strengthens safety while reducing friction and preserving a positive experience.
Looking ahead, Mercedes-Benz Stadium plans to expand its use of computer vision and data-driven insights to better understand crowd flow, inform dynamic decision-making, and improve operations during events. Business intelligence will also be applied across departments, including merchandising and food and beverage, to improve operations and speed of service. Together, these capabilities support the venue’s security and hospitality priorities, using technology behind the scenes to help create a safer, more efficient, and welcoming experience for fans, employees, and the community.
