MANTECA, CA – October 29, 2026 – PRESSADVANTAGE –

Recent PG&E Public Safety Power Shutoffs across parts of Northern and Central California have highlighted the importance of preparing electrically powered equipment for outages. High Quality Fence, a fencing and gate contractor serving Manteca and surrounding communities, is drawing attention to an often-overlooked consideration: how automatic driveway gates function when utility power is unavailable.

PG&E reported that more than 1,600 customers in Contra Costa County lost power during an October 2026 safety shutoff. The outages did not necessarily affect Manteca, but they serve as a reminder that automatic gates rely on electricity unless another power source is available. Property owners can check PG&E’s outage information for their addresses and review their gate equipment before the next power interruption.

Automatic gates do not all respond to power outages in the same way. Their operation depends on the gate operator, power source, installation, and any backup system. A swing gate at one property may respond differently from a slide gate elsewhere. Keypads, remotes, and intercoms also serve different functions from the motor that moves the gate. Keeping one component powered does not guarantee that the entire entrance will remain operational.

PG&E’s emergency-planning guidance encourages households to learn how to open garage doors manually. Driveway gates use different mechanisms, so the same instructions do not apply to every installation. Owners should identify their gate operator, locate its manual, and review the manufacturer’s instructions before an outage makes access difficult.

“Every automatic gate setup is different, and the outage response depends on the equipment at the property,” said Moises Flores, owner of High Quality Fence. “Owners should locate their operator’s make and model and read the manufacturer’s manual before a power shutoff, not after they are already standing at a gate that will not move.”

LiftMaster, for example, lists battery backup and a manual disconnect among the features of its CSL24UL commercial slide-gate operator. These features belong to a specific model and are not standard across all automatic gates or LiftMaster systems. Owners should not assume their gates will open automatically, remain locked, or operate for a particular number of hours after utility power fails.

For existing installations, owners can identify the operator’s make and model, check whether backup power is installed, and locate the manufacturer’s instructions for manual operation. Batteries and controls may require periodic attention, so previous performance does not guarantee that a system will work as expected during the next outage.

Gate operation during a power interruption depends on the equipment and its configuration. PG&E provides outage information for individual addresses, while the gate manufacturer’s documentation explains how the operator functions without utility power. Checking both sources before an outage can help property owners understand their options and prepare for potential access disruptions.
