Houston Attorney Neeloy Azad Joins Discovery Team in Federal Lawsuit Challenging Texas Terrorist Designation of CAIR

HOUSTON, TX, UNITED STATES, September 8, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Houston civil rights attorney Neeloy Azad has joined the discovery team as a volunteer attorney in CAIR v. Abbott, Case No. 1:25-cv-01878, pending in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas. The lawsuit challenges Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s designation of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) as a foreign terrorist organization, arguing that the designation is unconstitutional.

Azad’s role on the discovery team is part of his broader legal advocacy and civic engagement work across Texas, which focuses on immigration rights, constitutional protections, free speech, and community education.

Through his Houston-based advocacy organization, The Desi Democracy Project, Azad works with community members, faith groups, and grassroots organizers on legal and civic issues affecting immigrant communities and other historically underrepresented groups. His work centers on what he describes as the need for stronger due process protections and greater accountability from state and federal agencies.

With more than five years of legal experience, Azad has become involved in several constitutional and civil rights matters. This includes a suit initiated by Azad against FlixBus for unsafe riding conditions for passengers and several hearings for tenants in Houston.

Azad’s advocacy has also extended beyond the courtroom. Earlier this year, Azad appeared on Fox News to discuss federal immigration enforcement and called for the abolition of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). During the appearance, he argued that the agency’s current structure is incompatible with constitutional due process protections.
